When Inspiration Is Lacking

When Inspiration Is Lacking

Unless if you've been hiding under a rock, you're probably aware of the state of the world right now. It feels like every week something bad happens. Maybe things are affecting you personally, or maybe you're worried for others. Whatever it may be, it's clear that stress weighs heavy on the soul. So if you're like me, you may be struggling to find inspiration in a time that's not-so-inspiring.

Back in the day, when I was at the height of my creative flow and had tons of time to make art (hello, high school senior Brooke), I was always full of ideas. It never felt like I was stuck on anything. I would create something new every chance I got. That freedom was empowering. Was it because I always had ideas? Or had I changed a bit from 18-year-old Brooke to now?

What I'm about to tell you is something that I've discovered after reflecting on my past self. Contrary to what I believed, I actually DID NOT have inspiration as often as I thought I did. I remember that many of my works came from boredom. I'd start sketching something and then slowly, the idea would come to fruition. So while you may be looking for an idea right now, the truth is, you don't need one.

As adults, we often find it hard to create something unless it has a purpose. Art isn't meant to be that way though. Of course, art can have meaning behind it, but it doesn't always have to be profound. So with that in mind, allow yourself to make art even if you don't have an amazing idea first.

If you're totally drawing a blank, have a look at your surroundings. Inspiration is all around you. Take a walk outside. Go to a new place that you've never been to. Check out photography books from your local library. Find an old photo from a relative.

Once you find your subject, take out your sketchbook and draw. Paint a scene and add details later. Put something on paper, because even if it doesn't turn into something, it's better than waiting. Who knows. You make be like me and find that your best work comes when you're not inspired.
